Types of Contact Lenses

Hello and welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now. Today we would like to discuss a topic you should understand before purchasing your contacts whether online or off: what type of contact lens to get.

There are two basic types of contact lenses.  The rigid lens and the soft lens.  Your lifestyle and type of eye correction you need will help determine which lens is right for you.

The most popular type of lens is the soft contact lens. The soft contact lens is made from a type of plastic called hydrogels which are very soft and flexible and contain water.  The cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye needs a  direct supply of oxygen and the water supplies the needed oxygen by allowing the oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye.

There are several advantages to soft contact lenses.  Because they are soft, they are easier to get use to and are more comfortable than the rigid type of lens. They are great for people who do not need to wear their lenses on a daily basis.  People who are active in sports like them because they tend to stay in place much better than the rigid lenses.
Besides being comfortable, may soft lens wearers have them tinted to either bring out the natural color of their eyes or change the color of them.

Soft lenses can be used to correct  some refractive problems but special “toric” lenses can be used by people who have astigmatism.

Rigid Lenses are also made of a plastic material, but are not as soft and flexible as the soft lens which can make the rigid lens harder to get use to.  It generally takes a week or more to feel comfortable with the rigid lens, but once you get use to them, you will forget you are wearing contact lenses. The rigid lens can correct more refractive problems than the soft lens. For some eye disorders such as Keratoconus, the only way to correct the vision is by using the rigid lens.  Rigid lenses do not have to be replaced as often as the soft lens.

The first rigid lenses were not as comfortable to wear and did not  allow enough oxygen to pass through the lens but the new plastic material used in the making of  modern lenses is very permeable to oxygen and allow a very adequate flow of oxygen to reach the eye. This type of lens is commonly known as “rigid gas permeable” or “RGP” lenses for short.
