The Importance of Eye Exams

Welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now. Today we discuss the importance of having an eye exam before purchasing your contact lenses.

It is very important to visit an optometrist and get an eye examination before purchasing contact lenses.  Contact lenses are more complicated then the reading glasses you purchase at a retail store.  Contacts must fit the eye properly to prevent injury to the eye surface.  If the lens does not fit properly blinking of the eye can cause the lens to dislodge and cause injury.  Proper fitting also prevents any bad reaction from the eye and the immune system.

Your optometrist will give you a thorough eye exam before prescribing your contact lenses.  These exams will let the professional know exactly what your vision problem is by measuring any refractive errors that are present.  Your eye doctor will  also take a few measurement of your eye to determine the curvature of the surface of your eye.  He or she will ask you some questions about your lifestyle.  By doing all these measurements and finding out about your lifestyle the doctor can determine what type of lens will be best suited for you.

The doctor will first place a set of trial lenses in your eyes to determine the exact fit you will need.  Sometimes several different trial sets of lenses will be needed before the proper fit can be determined.  Once the doctor finds the proper fit a presciption can be placed and your lenses can be ordered.
After the proper fit has been determined the optometrist will give you a preliminary set of lenses. He or she will show you how to apply and remove the lenses from your eyes properly. You will also learn the correct way to clean and maintain the lenses.  You will generally wear your new lenses for a week or two weeks at the most to make sure they fit correctly and are addressing your sight problem. Sometimes, the prescription and the lens may have to be changed slightly to correct any problems visually or comfort wise.

Eye exams are an important part of  wearing contact lenses.  Eye infections can develop quickly when you wear contacts because they fit directly on the eye surface. The eye surface is easily subject to infection.  Even regular cleaning and disinfecting will not always be enough to prevent an eye infection.  Serious complications such as blindness are quite rare but a regular eye exam will insure that you don’t suffer any type of eye damage.
