How Long You Can Wear Contact Lenses

Hello and welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now. We hope to discuss with you today the importance of having a healthy wearing schedule on your contacts.

Wearing schedules vary from one type of lens to another.  The schedule also depends on the eye correction you are wearing them for.  Never wear any lens longer than your eyecare professional recommends.  Most problems related to contact lenses arise from wearing the lenses for too long of periods of time.

The “daily wear” schedule is the most common one.  The lenses are applied in the morning and then taken out before going to bed.  The lenses are cleaned and disinfected before reapplying them in the morning.

There are some lenses that do not have to be taken out when the patient goes to bed.  These “extended wear” lenses are made of newer materials and it is safe to sleep with the contacts in your eyes either occasionally or for a period of time up to 30 days.  Because of the special construction of these lenses, large amounts of oxygen are able to pass through the lens which allows the eye to receive enough oxygen.

Not everyone will be able to wear the new soft lenses. Certain conditions of the eye could make it impossible for some people to wear this type of  lens.  A consultation with your eyecare professional is the only safe way to determine whether this type of lens is right for you.

Never sleep with your contact lenses in your eyes unless your optometrist has clearly stated that is safe to do so. The all important oxygen supply to your eye could be cut off if your lenses are not especially made for sleeping .   This could result in permanent and severe eye damage.
