Computer Users and the Benefits of Contact Lenses
Filed Under Uncategorized | 3 Comments
In the digital age, the team at Contact Lenses Australia Now realizes that computer users wish to know whether contact lenses are safe. Do they portect from UV? Will the long-term strain damage your eye? Today we discuss this topic.
Computer users often wonder if it is safe for them to switch from traditional eye glass to contact lenses. Whether you use a computer a lot or not at all, you may be afraid of all the trouble you have heard contact lenses can cause. If you already wear contacts and are a heavy computer user you may be concerned about health risks. The best way to answer to these questions is to consult with your eyecare professional. Eye doctors will prescribe the lenses that are best suited for all of your needs including computer needs.
Computer Vision Syndrome results from too many hours on the computer. This condition will lead to dry eye. Eye dryness can be caused by several factors. Computer users do not produce as many tears as most people and sometimes due to the chemical makeup of their tears, they don’t produce enough. As we get older our tear production decreases. Our environment can contribute to dry eyes also. For instance, if you are in a room with poor ventilation or too much heat or air or even smoke, eyes will become dry. Blinking is one of the most important factors in keeping eyes moist and when someone is using a computer they tend to blink less than normal.
Even though soft contact lenses are made from polymers and water and they feel comfortable in your eye, the water evaporates from the lens overtime. The lens will then absorb your tears which makes your eyes dry feeling. The more water a lens holds, the more it is likely to lose its moisture.
There are many symptoms for dry eye. You may feel like you have a foreign object in your eye. Redness, itching, and soreness can also develop. You may even have an excessive amount of tearing. Contact lenses that are especially made for computer use are made of special materials. Soft contact lenses are made from hydrophillic plastics.
These soft lenses contain water. Rigid Gas Permeable lenses or RGP lenses are made
from polymeric materials and do not contain any water. Most doctors recommend their patients wear RGP lenses for computer use. Since they do not contain water, the water will not evaporate from the surface of the lens.
Computers users need to learn the proper care of their contact lenses. Remember to handle one lens at a time. Teach yourself to always start with the same lens, whether it be right or left. You should also take care of the lens case itself. Doctors recommend you wash the lens case with unperfumed soap at least every two months. Do not use the same solution twice for cleaning your lenses and never use cleaner after the expiration date has expired. It is wise to keep a pair of regular glasses handy in case you should catch a cold to prevent germs from getting into your eyes.

How Long You Can Wear Contact Lenses
Filed Under Uncategorized | 2 Comments
Hello and welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now. We hope to discuss with you today the importance of having a healthy wearing schedule on your contacts.
Wearing schedules vary from one type of lens to another. The schedule also depends on the eye correction you are wearing them for. Never wear any lens longer than your eyecare professional recommends. Most problems related to contact lenses arise from wearing the lenses for too long of periods of time.
The “daily wear” schedule is the most common one. The lenses are applied in the morning and then taken out before going to bed. The lenses are cleaned and disinfected before reapplying them in the morning.
There are some lenses that do not have to be taken out when the patient goes to bed. These “extended wear” lenses are made of newer materials and it is safe to sleep with the contacts in your eyes either occasionally or for a period of time up to 30 days. Because of the special construction of these lenses, large amounts of oxygen are able to pass through the lens which allows the eye to receive enough oxygen.
Not everyone will be able to wear the new soft lenses. Certain conditions of the eye could make it impossible for some people to wear this type of lens. A consultation with your eyecare professional is the only safe way to determine whether this type of lens is right for you.
Never sleep with your contact lenses in your eyes unless your optometrist has clearly stated that is safe to do so. The all important oxygen supply to your eye could be cut off if your lenses are not especially made for sleeping . This could result in permanent and severe eye damage.

Contact Lens Replacement
Filed Under Uncategorized | 2 Comments
Hello and welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now, where we would like to both ingrain into contact lenses users the importance of good maintenance as well as provide good deals for contact lenses. Today, the topic is contact lens replacement, and how frequently you should do it.
Good Eye health is very important and to make sure we maintain healthy eyes, it is very important to know how often to change your contact lenses. Just like regular eyeglasses, contact lenses will need changing over-time for a number of reasons. There are several types of contact lenses and each lens will differ in the amount of wear time. For this reason you should always consult with an eyecare specialist before you purchase contact lenses. These professionals can help determine which type of lens will best meet your eyecare needs.
Generally speaking, hard, or rigid contact lenses can be worn for a year or two unless an eye exam indicates a change in prescription is needed. Replacement of soft lenses is needed on a yearly basis regardless of the outcome of your eye exam. Though the soft lenses are more comfortable than the rigid lenses they are more costly due to the need to replace them once a year.
Soft lenses that are “disposable” need to be changed every two to four weeks. The initial cost of the disposable lenses is less than the soft or rigid lenses but they do require very frequent replacement. Most soft lenses are “disposable” lenses and need to be replaced at regular intervals to prevent any deposit build up that can occur. The newer soft, “disposable” lens is made of material that is not suitable for long-term wear. Even though these new lenses will provide good vision and proper eye function, they will wear out quite quickly. Some people prefer the disposable ones because they can be purchased with different tints allowing them to change the appearance of their eye color.

Types of Contact Lenses
Filed Under Uncategorized | 2 Comments
Hello and welcome back to Contact Lenses Australia Now. Today we would like to discuss a topic you should understand before purchasing your contacts whether online or off: what type of contact lens to get.
There are two basic types of contact lenses. The rigid lens and the soft lens. Your lifestyle and type of eye correction you need will help determine which lens is right for you.
The most popular type of lens is the soft contact lens. The soft contact lens is made from a type of plastic called hydrogels which are very soft and flexible and contain water. The cornea, which is the clear front surface of the eye needs a direct supply of oxygen and the water supplies the needed oxygen by allowing the oxygen to pass through the lens to the eye.
There are several advantages to soft contact lenses. Because they are soft, they are easier to get use to and are more comfortable than the rigid type of lens. They are great for people who do not need to wear their lenses on a daily basis. People who are active in sports like them because they tend to stay in place much better than the rigid lenses.
Besides being comfortable, may soft lens wearers have them tinted to either bring out the natural color of their eyes or change the color of them.
Soft lenses can be used to correct some refractive problems but special “toric” lenses can be used by people who have astigmatism.
Rigid Lenses are also made of a plastic material, but are not as soft and flexible as the soft lens which can make the rigid lens harder to get use to. It generally takes a week or more to feel comfortable with the rigid lens, but once you get use to them, you will forget you are wearing contact lenses. The rigid lens can correct more refractive problems than the soft lens. For some eye disorders such as Keratoconus, the only way to correct the vision is by using the rigid lens. Rigid lenses do not have to be replaced as often as the soft lens.
The first rigid lenses were not as comfortable to wear and did not allow enough oxygen to pass through the lens but the new plastic material used in the making of modern lenses is very permeable to oxygen and allow a very adequate flow of oxygen to reach the eye. This type of lens is commonly known as “rigid gas permeable” or “RGP” lenses for short.
